If left untreated, gingivitis can spread to underlying tissue and bone, and turn into Periodontal Disease.  Periodontal disease is the number one cause of adult tooth loss.  Most people believe that tooth decay is what is the main reason for tooth loss, but we know now that its “loose teeth” often caused by complications of periodontal disease which is bone loss which is the major cause of tooth loss in adults.
