Bleeding gums from brushing or flossing are often red flags to inform us that our gums are sugaring from Gingivitis. Gingivitis can be treated by having your teeth professionally cleaned by a Dentist and by continuing to keep your teeth clean by daily brushing and flossing.
Plaque is an invisible, sticky film composed mainly of bacteria that forms on your teeth when sugars in food interact with bacteria normally found in your mouth. Plaque can form in only 24 hours if not cleaned properly.
Plaque that stays on your teeth can harden under your gum line into tartar (calculus). Tartar is difficult to remove, creates a protective shield for bacteria and causes irritation along the gum line. You need professional dental cleaning to remove tartar.
The longer that plaque and tartar remain on your teeth, the more irritated your gums become, leading to painful, swollen gums and eventually to tooth decay.
Left untreated, Gingivitis can lead to a much more serious disease called Periodontal disease. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and regular dental checkups, can help prevent and in most cases reverse gingivitis.
